Founder of one of history’s most far-reaching and extensive empires, Spain occupies a strategic position between Europe and Northern Africa at the western entrance to the Mediterranean. The country’s 45 million people enjoy some of Europe’s finest weather, some of its most beautiful cities and some of its loveliest beaches – tourism is one of the key drivers of the Spanish economy.
Spain is home to the world’s 12th largest economy and Europe’s fifth-largest economy and per capita income matches that enjoyed by the citizens of France and Germany. Spain is the most significant foreign direct investor in Latin America, particularly after it joined the euro zone, when the country enjoyed a construction boom fuelled by low interest rates. Spain has also become, in recent years, a prime destination for British holidaymakers and pensioners.
Spain has long been an agricultural powerhouse – key exports include beef, citrus fruits, dairy products, fish, grain, olives, pork, poultry, sugar beets, vegetables and wine grapes. Outside of agriculture and tourism, Spain companies continue to make their mark in industries such as apparel and footwear, automobiles, chemicals, clay and refractory products, food and beverage, machine tools, metals and metal manufactures, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals and textiles.
In May 2010, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the centre-left prime minister, announced spending cuts, including pay cuts for civil servants and government ministers; these pay decreases were part of an US$18.5B reduction in government spending approved by the Spanish parliament. Following these extraordinary measures, the Spanish government expects growth of 1.3% in 2011 and 2.5% percent in 2012.
